The PlayStation-exclusive roguelike Returnal may be two years old, but it still makes a lasting impression on some fans, as a recent Reddit thread hails the title as a “masterpiece.”
A Reddit user posted a story on the r/PS5 community detailing their experience with the game, a notoriously difficult roguelike title and third-person shooter, hailing it as a “masterpiece” worth playing for all audiences despite its challenging gameplay. Their story details some highlights of their reported 21 hours with the game, in which they gradually practiced and built up their character to take out some of the more difficult bosses — an experience they say is massively rewarding.
Returnal is a third-person roguelike shooter game from developer Housemarque, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive. Also available on Steam, the game puts players in control of stranded space pilot Selene Vassos, who must use her myriad tools and weapons to fight off hostile creatures on an alien planet in order to survive. Trapped in a time loop, Selene is resurrected every time she dies and must face the enemies that took her down all over again across each stage’s three biomes, with weapons and loot dropping frequently for potential upgrades.
The game was already a hit with fans of the roguelike genre, but it has found a new life once again on the r/PS5 subreddit as users come together to praise the game in the comments of the original post. Most fans laud the title’s fast-paced shooter gameplay, which allows players to dash to avoid attacks and counter by returning fire across each stage’s three biomes.
