Warner Bros. Finally Answers Questions About Upcoming Wonder Woman Game Being Live Service

After a recent reveal that Warner Bros. would focus on live service titles for its major IPs, the company had to dispel some fears about the fate of the upcoming Wonder Woman game.

In a recent job listing that appeared from Warner Bros. online, the company stated that it was looking for staff to turn some of its major IPs, such as DC Comics characters, into high-budget live service video games. Naturally, this sparked rumors and worries from fans about the fate of the previously announced Wonder Woman video game, with many stating their concerns about the title potentially becoming a live service model like Destiny 2 or Marvel’s Avengers. However, Warner Bros. has finally come forward to quell these rumors with a statement to IGN stating that the game is not in development as a live service title after all.

Live service games function as online multiplayer experiences with procedural content updates to which developers can add new content routinely, allowing for deep monetization and long-term profits. However, the live service model has become controversial within the gaming community, with players criticizing titles like Fortnite and Destiny 2 for leaning heavily on microtransactions and seasonal progression systems that sometimes come at the cost of meaningful content.

Warner Bros.’ recent plans to turn its major properties into live service video games were therefore instantly controversial as well, causing fans to worry about the fate of future games that the company previously announced, including Wonder Woman. Fortunately for concerned fans, the game is reportedly a third-person action game with an original story set in the DC universe that utilizes the Nemesis System from WB’s Middle Earth games for its combat loop, causing defeated enemies to respawn later to enact revenge on the player.

While Diana of Themyscira is exempt from the live service trend for now, Warner Bros. has not hesitated to turn some of its other DC characters into an always-online experience, such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is set to release next year. From Batman: Arkham Knight developers Rocksteady, that game is currently in development as a live service title and will reportedly have seasonal progression and a battle pass with paid cosmetic unlocks, although Warner Bros. has reassured fans that it will have consistent free content updates.

Wonder Woman is currently in development at Warner Bros. and does not currently have a set release window.
