Genshin Impact‘s eagerly anticipated Version 4.2 update, “Masquerade of the Guilty,” is set to launch next week.
As announced by HoYoverse, this update promises to enrich the game’s narrative and expand its world, introducing new characters and challenges and continuing the gripping storyline that began in Version 4.0. Players can expect to dive into new underwater regions east of Fontaine, unlocking the next chapter in the Traveler’s journey amid impending doom.
The nation of Fontaine is teetering on the edge of disaster as the Archon Quest unfolds. An existential threat looms in the form of Primordial Seawater, capable of dissolving the very essence of Fontainians. In response, unlikely alliances are forged, even with the Fatui Harbinger Arlecchino, to stave off this crisis. Players can expect to face new adversaries, such as the All-Devouring Narwhal, a weekly boss with devastating area attacks, and the Hydro Tulpa, a creature with the chilling ability to strengthen itself in battle.
However, the update isn’t all about gloom; it also introduces two significant characters from Fontaine. The Hydro Archon Furina joins as a five-star Hydro sword wielder, offering an elegant combat style that can switch between two Arkhe alignments, altering her appearance and elemental skills. Furina’s powers peak with her Elemental Burst, granting both damage and healing boons to her team. Charlotte, a four-star Cryo catalyst user, combines journalism and combat with her Kamera Monsieur Verite, providing healing and Cryo damage. Their introduction is timed with the rerun of Baizhu’s Event Wish, followed by popular characters Cyno and Kamisato Ayato.

Fontaine’s geography also expands with the inclusion of Erinnyes Forest and the Morte Region. Here, players will ascend into “The Narzissenkreuz Adventure” within the Tower of Ipsissimus, unraveling the mysteries of the Primordial Sea. This expansion isn’t without its challenges; players must purify lands tainted by mysterious contaminants with the assistance of the unique Xenochromatic Ball Octopus. Companions such as Freminet and the mechanical penguin Thelxie will accompany players on quests to investigate new mysteries like the Water Imps of Erinnyes Island.
Beyond the main and world quests, the update is packed with engaging events and mini-games offering unique rewards. Players can enhance Thelxie through various activities, including circuitry puzzles and collection tasks. Additionally, the Fungi event poses a fresh combat training experience, where players can face off against formidable foes. For those with an eye for photography, a special event centered on this art form will provide the Special Analysis Zoom Lens — a new gadget to capture the world of Fontaine.
Genshin Impact Version 4.2 will be arriving on Nov. 8. With cross-progression and co-op functions, players can explore Fontaine on PlayStation systems, PC, Android and iOS. Pre-installation is scheduled to go live on Monday morning on mobile and PC.
