Exclusive Sonic Dream Team Game Announced for Apple Arcade

A new 3D Sonic the Hedgehog mobile game called Sonic Dream Team will be released exclusively for Apple Arcade.

On YouTube, the official Sonic the Hedgehog account released the teaser for the new mobile game starring Sonic and his furry friends. According to Apple’s press release, Doctor Eggman — who recently slashed the stache for Movember — has discovered an ancient device called The Reverie that has the power to manifest a person’s dreams into the real world. As expected, Doctor Eggman plans to use the dream-making device in his evil schemes for world domination.

Following in the footsteps of recent releases like Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon and Sonic Superstars, Sonic Dream Team will consist of six playable characters. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Cream and Rouge. While Amy’s video game appearance has gone up recently thanks to recent Sonic games like Sonic Origins Plus, Rouge and Cream haven’t been playable in a 3D Sonic game for quite some time.

The inclusion of Cream the Rabbit might be the most surprising. Rouge the Bat is prominently featured in the Netflix Sonic Prime cartoon. On the other hand, Cream hasn’t been in a major Sonic game since the 2003 release of Sonic Heroes. However, she is featured in the Sonic comics and various spin-off games made for console and mobile.

SEGA HARDlight is the developer of Sonic Dream Team. The British video game company worked on a variety of Sonic mobile games such as Sonic Jump, Sonic Dash, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Racing. Powerhouse Animation Studios, the animation company that worked on Sonic Origins, also worked on the 2D animated cutscenes for Sonic Dream Team.

The surprise announcement of Sonic Dream Team comes as Sega’s most iconic mascot is enjoying a pretty strong year. Despite the divisive reception towards the final update, opinions on Sonic Frontiers remain somewhat positive. The new 2D Sonic multiplayer game was also well-received by fans and critics alike. Development on the new live-action Sonic movie resumes and the Knuckles spinoff is expected to land on Paramount+ soon. Lastly, Sega is expanding its reach with animated TikTok Sonic shorts aimed at a younger demographic.

Sonic Dream Team will be released exclusively for Apple Arcade on Dec. 5.
