Director Confirms Insomniac’s Wolverine game is Set in the Same Universe as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

While gamers don’t know much about Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game yet, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 director Bryan Intihar confirmed that both superhero titles are set in the same universe.

Speaking with Kinda Funny Games, Intihar said that both Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine are set in the 1048 universe. 1048 is a name that eagle-eyed fans may recognize – the number popped up in the Wolverine teaser, and it was the listed universe number for Insomniac’s Peter Parker in Across the Spider-Verse.

Insomniac Teases a Possible Venom Spinoff

The fact that the games are set in the same universe raised the question of a possible crossover or cameos. That being said, Insomniac is being tight-lipped about Wolverine’s development so far. In an interview with IGN, Intihar said, “We wouldn’t be true Marvel fans if we didn’t have discussions like that, but I think for us it was, ‘Hey, working on these games is really hard. They’re really complicated.’ And I think it was just like, ‘Hey, let’s let the Wolverine team cook.’ Let’s let them cook and if something ever happens in the future, great.”

It wouldn’t be the first time other franchises were mentioned in Marvel’s Spider-Man, either. The first game features the Avengers Tower, Wakandan Embassy, and Doctor Strange’s Sanctum as locations that players can swing by. Players don’t get to see any of the other heroes, but the first game did establish the fact that the Avengers — and likely countless other heroes and villains — exist in its universe. However, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 puts both Peter and Miles Morales at the forefront, allowing their stories and adventures to stand on their own.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is the third game in the franchise, following 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Players can take control of both Peter and Miles, who each have their own unique abilities, gadgets and suits. The game also features a new set of villains such as The Lizard, Venom and Kraven the Hunter. The story also heavily revolves around Harry Osborn and Peter using the iconic black symbiote suit.

Wolverine was announced in 2021 during a Sony State of Play event. The game currently does not have a release date set and no footage outside the teaser trailer has been released, but the game is confirmed to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
