Michael Myers Faces Off Against Match-3 Puzzles in First Official Halloween Mobile Game

Evil is coming to mobile devices as the official Halloween mobile game, Halloween: A Match Made in Terror, launched this week on Android and Apple devices.

A Match Made in Terror is a match-three puzzle game in which Michael Myers stalks players as they fight back with various weapons and power-ups earned through matching three or more of the same pieces in progressively harder puzzle-based levels. Along the way, players will earn stars they can use to repair the decrepit house in which the game takes place and earn high scores to rank up on the global leaderboards.

The debut title from mobile app publisher Pumpkin Publishing, Inc., A Match Made in Terror is based on John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher film of the same name, which sees masked killer Michael Myers stalk a group of teenagers in the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis as final girl Laurie Strode in her debut role, the film became an instant classic that has spawned countless sequels and adaptations as recently as last year with David Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends.

During gameplay, Michael will get closer over time, encouraging fast-paced puzzle matching in order to beat each level, though he also inches closer if players make a wrong move or attempt to match pieces that do not fit. The faster they are, the more rewards players will earn and the more efficient it will be to upgrade the house in which the game is set, incentivizing players to finish levels as quickly and in as few moves as possible.

The game’s premise is depicted via a series of illustrated scenes of Michael Myers slowly ascending the stairs, as well as several CG-animated cutscenes showing his escape from the Smith’s Grove Sanitarium that kicked off the events of the original film. Some elements from the longstanding franchise also appear in the game, such as in-game puzzle pieces depicting a “Strode Realty” sign and brief appearances from Sheriff Brackett and Dr. Loomis, who face off against Michael in the film.

While this is the first official mobile game based on the franchise, Michael Myers has made numerous appearances in popular video games like Dead by Daylight where he is a playable killer and most recently, Fortnite, where he appears as a purchasable player skin. It is not the first of its kind, however, as Friday the 13th already received a title with a similar premise with Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle, although it features an entirely different gameplay style.

Halloween: A Match Made in Terror is available now for Android or iOS devices on the Google Play Store or the App Store.
