BioShock Movie Gets Update From Writer

Michael Green, one of the writers for the upcoming BioShock film for Netflix, has given a promising update on the film’s production.

In an interview with Collider, the writer for the upcoming Netflix film adaptation of the BioShock stated that the film’s script has not only resumed development with the end of the WGA strikes but also that the film itself is in very good shape and has received praise from both executives and other writers.

When talking about his discussions with director Francis Lawrence, Green stated, “We all love it. It’s a great big sprawling nightmare world we wanna see real. So, here’s hoping. I would love to have an update for you soon.” While he wasn’t able to disclose much else, this is a good sign of the film’s progress. The BioShock film’s director was also in charge of the Hunger Games films, including the upcoming The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Green himself was a writer for Logan and Blade Runner 2049.

What Is BioShock?

BioShock is a first-person shooter from 2K games released in 2007. It is set in an underwater city in the 1960s, torn apart by the discovery of power-granting serums known as plasmids. The title has received critical acclaim for its gameplay, atmosphere and themes and has become one of the most iconic games of the past few decades. Its sequels include the underrated BioShock 2 and the acclaimed BioShock Infinite. Given the game’s popularity, BioShock has seen many plans for an adaptation come and go. These go as far back as 2008, mere months after the game’s release, with Gore Verbinski set to direct before the project was scrapped. Other attempts have been made throughout the years as well.

Can a BioShock Film Work?

There have been several successful video game films in recent periods, including the Sonic movies, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and MAX’s The Last of Us, among others. Even outside of other successful video game adaptations, BioShock itself has served as an influence for various works outside of gaming. These include former planned director Gore Verbinski’s A Cure For Wellness and Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, the latter of which won Best Picture in 2018.

BioShock: The Collection is available for PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch.
