Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Gets Launch Trailer, Reveals New Villain

Sony and Insomniac Games have released the launch trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

The trailer focuses on several key elements that will drive the main campaign, including the personal stories of its trio of main characters. For example, viewers can see Miles Morales struggling mentally with certain things and seemingly being in several “dream sequences” focusing on his father’s death at the hands of Martin Li, aka Mr. Negative. Fans also know that Li will be in the game, and there’s even a shot of him fighting Miles. Miles goes to Peter for help, noting that this is “something different” than they’ve faced before.

As for Peter Parker, viewers can see him being “chosen” by the Symbiote and feeling the effects of it. Not only is he more aggressive with foes like The Lizard, but he dresses and acts differently and even tells off Mary Jane by noting that “he’s the hero” and not her. Throughout the trailer, Mary Jane tries to get through to Peter, even putting her life on the line at times in the process. Meanwhile, the Venom form takes full effect, complete with Tony Todd’s voice taking over.

However, the biggest revelation from the trailer might be the confirmation of a new villain that the Spider-Men will have to face: Sandman. While there have been many men to take that moniker, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will likely feature the Flint Marko version of the character, as he’s generally the most popular. In the comics, an accident led to his whole body being transformed into sand that he can control with ease. The trailer highlights how massive he can make his body and how difficult it will be for the Spider-Men to defeat him with their powers.

The trailer also hinted at various other things to come, including the continued role of Mayor Norman Osborne, who seems desperate to get the Symbiote back. Viewers also see a quick glimpse of Harry Osborne, who was the “host” to the Symbiote in the previous two games but seems to have lost it to Peter. What role the Osbornes will play in the overall campaign remains to be seen. The various glimpses of New York City in the trailer, which has been expanded in the title, highlights that both Spider-Men will have new ways to traverse the city via their “web wings” and the updated fast-travel system.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrives on Oct. 20 on PS5.
