Mortal Kombat 1 Reveals First Footage of Omni-Man DLC

Mortal Kombat 1 showed gameplay footage of its first DLC character, Omni-Man from Invincible, at NYCC on Saturday.

The world-conquering superpowered tyrant is arriving to wreak havoc on MK1’s roster as the first character of Kombat Pack 1 in November 2023. The character will be voiced by J.K. Simmons, who also brought Omni-Man to life in the Amazon Prime adaptation of Invincible.

In the trailer, Omni-Man can be seen butting heads with Scorpion and Liu Kang, as the Viltrumite warrior has seemingly invaded the Mortal Kombat 1 timeline with the intent to conquer it. Fans of Invincible will notice references to moments in the show throughout the trailer, and these come at the expense of Liu Kang and Scorpion.

In what appears to be Omni-Man’s fatal blow, he ruthlessly punches away at the head of Liu Kang, who is stuck on the ground — a not-so-subtle callback to when Omni-Man did the same to Mark Grayson while fighting him during the finale of Invincible Season 1. His fatalities are even more grisly, as the trailer shows Omni-Man squeezing the head of Liu Kang, who presumably suffers the same fate that Red Rush did in the pilot episode. Meanwhile, Omni-Man’s fatality on Scorpion calls back to the infamous train scene in the finale of Season 1, which didn’t kill Mark but will surely be fatal to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster.

Omni-Man and his brutally violent take on the Superman fighting style make him a perfect fit for the gory violence of Mortal Kombat. Given the series’ penchant for guest characters ever since Mortal Kombat 9 added Freddy Krueger in 2011, it’s no surprise that the first DLC pack for the newest game features three guests.

The other two guests are the Peacemaker from DC Comics and the HBO Max Series of the same name and Homelander from Amazon Prime’s The Boys. As Omni-Man and Homelander are iconic examples of the “evil Superman” archetype, fans of both franchises have spent countless hours comparing the two and debating who would win in a fight. Now, players can settle that debate in Mortal Kombat 1 once Homelander releases. Joining the three guest characters in Kombat Pack 1 are Ermac, Quan Chi and Takeda. The aforementioned three haven’t been playable since Mortal Kombat X in 2015.

Omni-Man will be available at an undisclosed date in November. Those who have purchased the premium edition or Kombat Pack 1 will gain access to him early.
