The Adventure Zone’s McElroy Brothers Craft a Wild Magic Table for Roll for Sandwich

Jake Pauwels brought bardic inspiration to his lunch break in the popular TikTok series Roll for Sandwich, which has enlisted the chaotic whims of The Adventure Zone‘s McElroy brothers for its fifth season.

Justin, Travis and Griffin McElroy built a wild magic table for Pauwels, which offered a d20’s worth of culinary twists to Roll for Sandwich’s upcoming Season 5 creations. In Roll for Sandwich, Pauwels employs Dungeons & Dragons mechanics to craft a distinct lunch, rolling for bread, main, cheese, roughage, wild magic, and sauce. One of Travis McElroy’s suggestions, the Cincinnati-based BBQ chips Grippo’s, became the first McElroy wild magic suggestion deployed by Pauwels in Season 5.

Not all the McElroys’ suggestions were as scrumptious as Grippo’s, with other entries including less delectable items such as tinned oysters and one tablespoon of cumin (distributed equally). The McElroys did not confine themselves solely to edible entries, with other wild magic instructions including experiences such as Pauwels eating his creation pubically at a nearby Subway restaurant or consuming his sandwich while listening to the song “Christmas Shoes”. One particular area of debate came from the table’s second item, which dictated that Pauwels must bag his lunch and submerge it in toilet water before consuming it. This particularly unpleasant wild magic option led to some debate among the brothers, resulting in the signature McElroy riffing familiar to fans of The Adventure Zone and My Brother, My Brother and Me.

Roll for Sandwich’s combination of unhinged food content wrapped in Dungeons & Dragons ephemera paired perfectly with the McElroy brother’s established brand. Along with their father, Clint McElroy, the brothers have become well known for their hilarious antics on the many TTRPG quests of The Adventure Zone.

Aside from Dungeons & Dragons, food-based humor has always played an essential role in the McElroy’s content, as evidenced by Griffin McElroy’s infamous banana crunch, Justin McElroy’s meditative cereal podcast The Empty Bowl, the convenience store quick review series Things I Bought at Sheetz and My Brother, My Brother and Me‘s podcast-within-a-podcast “Munch Squad.” Pauwels certainly nominated the perfect trio for the job, though it might be a decision he comes to regret if he ever rolls a two on the McElroy’s wild magic table and has to submerge a sandwich in toilet water.

The full-length video of the McElroy’s crafting their wild magic table can be found on their YouTube channel, with new episodes of Roll for Sandwich featuring their unique suggestions available on Pauwels’ TikTok, Adventures in Aardia.
