Age of Empires 2 Player Recreates Whole Skyrim Game Map

Skyrim is being remade into a real-time strategy game through a clever Age of Empires II mod that recreates The Elder Scrolls V maps with unique characters and playable campaigns.

Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is being developed as a real-time strategy game thanks to a dedicated Age of Empires II player who shared sneak peeks of a game mod showing overhead maps of iconic Skyrim locations. Reddit user Grouchy_Bluejay4511 previewed the mod with screenshots of Whiterun, Solitude and Windhelm, all recreated within Age of Empires II but with aesthetics accurately resembling the holds of Skyrim, which appears to have been recreated in painstaking detail. If the mod is playable, it is expected to revive the now 24-year-old Age of Empires game.

The Reddit user teased that the mod will also piggyback on the typical Age of Empires gameplay, promising over 50 quests and 100 unique characters included in the finished version. Players will be able to build and reinforce any of the holds to dominate the others and gain sole control of Skyrim. Grouchy_Bluejay4511 intends to upload the game to the Steam Workshop after it has been debugged and polished. The user’s initiative received overwhelming support in the Reddit thread, with many looking forward to the release so they can experience Skyrim in a completely different game.

Control a Dragonborn in RTS Gameplay

It’s expected that the mod will retain the Age of Empires II mechanics, but thankfully, one of the screenshots offers a clue on the actual gameplay, indicating “P8 (GREEN) controls the Dragonborn! The Dragonborn can complete quests to unlock bonuses and locations in each Hold; a new Dragonborn will respawn after 15 minutes if killed.” The same screenshot has a legend indicating P8 GREEN as Falkreath, a hold in southern Skyrim. The in-game text suggests that players will be able to control key protagonists of Skyrim, much like the typical hero characters of RTS games.

The Age of Empires II “reboot” of Skyrim confirms the latter’s enduring appeal to gamers, with many recreating and reimagining the RPG in different genres ever since the first game was released. Countless mods of The Elder Scrolls games also exist, with many players even sharing detailed how-to guides to redesign the games, boosting the replay value with custom characters and revamped mechanics.

Bethesda recently released its latest Elder Scrolls title on Google Play with The Elder Scrolls: Castles, a castle management simulator that lets players govern their own kingdoms and dynasties in Tamriel.
