Assassin’s Creed Red Art Reveals Female Shinobi as New Protagonist

A writer for Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red updated their LinkedIn banner and revealed the game’s next protagonist as a female shinobi in the process.

The art itself depicts a female shinobi wearing the series’ iconic hood standing against a red field — almost certainly the protagonist of the upcoming game. The LinkedIn profile belongs to Pierre Boudreau, a senior writer for Ubisoft based in Quebec who has worked with the company for six years. A picture of the banner was also posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the Assassin’s Creed fan site Access the Animus. As there has yet to be an official announcement from either Ubisoft or the official accounts of Assassin’s Creed, the name, backstory and abilities of the game’s protagonist are yet to be revealed.

Everything to Know About Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red So Far

At this time of writing, there has yet to be an official name released for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red. As was shown in last year’s announcement teaser, the game will be set in feudal Japan. This has perhaps been the most-requested historical setting for the Assassin’s Creed series given how befitting it is for the franchise’s themes and gameplay. Similar games include Fromsoft’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Sucker Punch Production’s Ghost of Tsushima.

This will be the first time that a mainline Assassin’s Creed game has had a solo female protagonist. Shao Jun of Chronicles was only in a spinoff, while Odyssey and Valhalla had players choose between a male and female protagonist.

What to Expect From the Future of the Assassin’s Creed Franchise

This reveal comes weeks after the release of the latest game in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, which received acclaim for going back to the roots of the series. A game set in feudal Japan is also likely to focus more on stealth and assassination. This likely marks the series moving away from the open-world RPGs of Odyssey and Valhalla, which received lukewarm reception from fans.

Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red is also helping to build up to the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Infinity — a project from Ubisoft that supposedly acts as a bridge between the various games and setting within the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is available for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation.
