Berzerk: Recharged is Bringing Back the 80s With a Twist

The Atari: Recharged series is set to bring back a legendary foe in their upgraded Berzerk: Recharged title.

The original game was made in the 80s and was considered a “crown jewel” at the time, thanks to its gameplay and looks. The upcoming Berzerk: Recharged will feature the classic gameplay style but will alter things by upgrading the graphics to a degree Atarisystems couldn’t fathom before and adding new power-ups for players to use. Gamers also have a co-op option to take on the game’s numerous challenges together. And, that might be the best option given the return of the villain known as “Evil Otto,” whom many may know from the original to be quite a challenge to overcome.

Berzerk: Recharged is Coming Soon

Atari stated in a press release, “Considered one of the crown jewels of the 80s’ gaming golden era, the original Berzerk was a top-down multidirectional shooter that saw players fighting hordes of armed robots through an endless, electrified maze. The highlight of Bezerk is Evil Otto, who manifests as a bouncing smiley face that mercilessly hunts down players. Unlike his contemporaries Inky, Blink and Clyde, Evil Otto won’t run away, can travel through walls, and is indestructible.”

Much like the original title, Berzerk: Recharged will feature many unique elements to keep the game intense and menacing, such as how the various robots chasing the player will be able to speak, a feature rarely used during the arcade era. The title will also feature the original 80s soundtrack so that the atmosphere will feel similar to the game that came decades before it. For those wishing that they could get the game in its original Atari form, the publisher will release a cartridge of the game that they can fully play or collect.

Other features of the revamped Atari title include the difficulty setting. The further players go through the mazes and stages, the tougher the challenges become. The game has twenty mazes that players can venture through. Gamers will notice when the challenges grow more difficult because the robots will change colors. New power-ups include doing more damage with weapons, having spread-out shots to hit multiple enemies at once, placing mines for enemies to trip over, or protecting the character with a shield. There will also be online leaderboards for players to showcase how far they made it.

No release date for Berzerk: Recharged has been announced.
