Bloodborne PS1-Style Kart-Racing Fan Game Gets New Trailer, Release Date

FromSoftware’s Bloodborne has received a trailer and release date for a PS1 demake kart-racer fan game titled Bloodborne Kart.

The game’s developer, Lilith Walther, released the trailer on YouTube and has announced that the game will be released on Jan. 31, 2024, on Itch.io for PC. Bloodborne Kart is a PS1 demake racing game with the characters and setting of FromSoftware’sBloodborne, with gameplay based on Nintendo’s iconic Mario Kart series.

What Is Bloodborne Kart?

As the title would suggest, Bloodborne Kart is a kart-racer based on FromSoftware’s game. A PS1-styled demake game, it will feature 12 characters as racers, including Gerhman, Micolash and Eileen the Crow, among others. There will be 16 maps, a campaign mode, split screen multiplayer and PvP. The idea for the game started out as a meme in 2017 before positive reception to the idea led to it eventually growing into an actual product. The game will also feature multiplayer boss battles and have items from the original game play an important role.

The creator of the game, Lilith Walther, is a veteran indie developer and has worked on various projects, including dabbling in a previous PS1 demake of Bloodborne. The other two developers are Corwyn Prichard and Evelyn Lark. As this is a fan project, Bloodborne Kart will be free, although it’s unknown how Sony and FromSoftware will respond to the game.

Can Bloodborne Kart Actually Work?

While this game was clearly built as part of a joke, it does have potential. The gameplay footage has shown how well the developers have managed to mesh the horror action of Bloodborne with the creative racing formula of the Mario Kart franchise. There have also been some successful examples over the years of dedicated fans putting their own creative spins on popular games, with a good example being the many from the Five Nights and Freddy’s series.

Moreover, there have been numerous games that ventured into creating kart racing spinoffs specifically, including Nickelodeon, Garfield and The Smurfs, to name only a few. Bloodborne Kart thus has the potential to go from an ascended meme to a legitimate racing game and reimagining of a classic.

Bloodborne Kart will be available for PC on Jan. 31, 2024.
