Clueless Gamer Conan O’Brien Creates Chaos in Starfield

Conan O’Brien has pushed his luck playing Bethesda’s Starfield by ardently pursuing romantic relationships with NPCs and testing the limits of the game’s mechanics.

Conan O’Brien’s improvised antics come from the latest episode of Clueless Gamer — a Team Coco segment where the talk show host plays through and candidly reviews video games. As the segment’s title suggests, O’Brien’s inexperience with video games shows in the video, making his playthrough fumbles and reactions even more entertaining. Previous episodes have seen him play everything from Grand Theft Auto V to Final Fantasy XV to Tomb Raider, all to comedic effect. In the latest episode, O’Brien plays Starfield like a newbie, running amok in missions and seeking romantic relationships with NPCs.

O’Brien immediately jumps into one of the game’s interactive scenarios with Sarah Morgan, one of Starield‘s recruitable NPCs. Morgan has a lifelong calling to find intelligent life across the cosmos, but players can also alter her character arc by attempting to recruit her in missions or pursue her as a romantic companion. As is his compulsion with female video game characters, O’Brien chooses Morgan’s “In Memoriam” mission but fails to court her favor in conversation. He eventually succeeds in finding romance with Sam Coe instead who, like Morgan, is one of the game’s four marriage prospects.

Conan O’Brien Pushes Starfield to Its Play Limits

O’Brien also tests the limits of Starfield’s play mechanics. He instantly regrets his decision to destroy a ship and its innocent pilot during a sidetracked mission and is similarly gung-ho in a gunfight skirmish later on. He also plays around with his character’s physical features to demonstrate the game’s customization options. The playthrough provides a glimpse into Starfield‘s procedurally generated and ever-expanding open world — a feature that offers unique experiences for its players. With five years’ worth of content confirmed post-launch, Bethesda promises to boost the game’s replay value with new things to discover and explore.

Players have scoured the corners of Starfield‘s open world since the game launched in early September, and many have even developed custom mods to remove features or optimize play performance. Similar to No Man’s Sky, Starfield attempts to break new ground by allowing players to make game-defining, permanent decisions. Anticipating the eventual need for play moderation and technical support, Bethesda has announced it will roll out an official mod for the community in 2024, promising fair and enhanced gameplay for all players navigating Starfield‘s expanse and surveying its planets.

Starfield is available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
