Critical Role Publisher Announces Candela Obscura Core Rulebook Set

Darrington Press, the publisher of Critical Role, has announced a new core rulebook for the Candela Obscura RPG that has been featured on the show.

The rulebooks will be available on the Critical Role website on Nov. 14. There will be two versions of the book that players can get: the “standard hardcover” edition and the “limited edition” hardcover copy intended for collectors. The RPG itself puts players in a “gilded world” that has been infused with magic from the occult. Players will be investigators attempting to both survive the world and figure out some of the truths within.

A New Game From the Critical Role Publisher

A press release from Darrington Press explains the game as follows: “Within the secret society Candela Obscura, individuals of varied talents work as a team—known as a circle—to investigate strange occurrences and dangerous magick, fighting back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. The first game to use the Illuminated Worlds System designed by Stras Acimovic and Layla Adelman, the Candela Obscure Core Rulebook includes everything you need to start a thrilling and terrifying game session, including rules, playable character options, sample campaigns, and expansive setting information both inside and beyond the city of Newfaire.”

In conjunction with the announcement, a special video featuring game designer Spenser Starke was released to get players prepped on how to dive into the game. The books will be priced at US$39.99 and $59.99 for the standard and limited edition covers, respectively. The books themselves will have 204 pages of content to allow players to understand and enhance their tabletop experiences, helping people to create their characters for the world. They will also feature “Over 90 pages detailing the turn of the century-inspired setting of the Fairelands, and in detail the city of Newfaire and the ancient ruins beneath known as Oldfaire.”

Players who will also be Gamemasters will have access to “four full examples” of how to run the game so that they can best describe the adventures to the other players. There will also be examples to help understand the Fairelands and the people/organizations the players can encounter. The book is rife with notes, illustrations and other features by the creative team to help bring the RPG world to life for both the Gamemaster and the players.

The Candela Obscure Core Rulebook will be released on Nov. 14.
