Prominent Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role has announced a “one-of-a-kind” one-shot inspired by the upcoming Persona 5 Tactica game featuring voice actors from the Persona game series.
The one-shot, announced on X (formerly Twitter), is set to air on Nov. 17, promoting the Persona 5 Tactica release on the same day. It will feature the voices behind Persona 5 characters Yusuke Kitagawa (Matthew Mercer), Haru Okumura (Xanthe Huynh) and Goro Akechi (Robbie Daymond). They will be joined by Critical Role personalities Jared Goldstein, Krystina Arielle and Liam O’Brien, the latter as the Dungeon Master.
Critical Role began as a creator-owned streaming show where eight cast members, led by Matthew Mercer, played an ongoing Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Beginning as a birthday one-off, it transitioned from Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition to Pathfinder before future host Felicia Day proposed live-streaming it for Geek & Sundry. Premiering on March 12, 2015, the series later transitioned to Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. Fans, known as “Critters,” emerged in 2015, solidifying the show’s place as a global streaming sensation. In 2022, the show launched the spin-off animated series The Legend of Vox Machina featuring their characters in animated format. Mercer has served as the long-term Dungeon Master for Critical Role but also voices major character Yusuke Kitagawa, aka “Fox,” in Persona 5.
Persona 5 is a popular Japanese role-playing video game developed by Atlus and is the sixth installment in the Persona series. Released in 2016, Persona 5 quickly became a critical and commercial success, known for its stylish design, compelling narrative and unique blend of social simulation and turn-based combat. The game is set in modern-day Tokyo and follows a group of high school students who form the “Phantom Thieves” to navigate both the real world and a supernatural realm known as the Metaverse. The game has received international acclaim and several adaptations, including both a manga and a crossover in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate via the playable character Joker.
The upcoming one-shot will promote the upcoming game Persona 5 Tactica, a spin-off from the Persona series. It runs parallel to the events of Persona 5, thrusting the Phantom Thieves of Hearts into an alternate Medieval European-inspired realm. The game revolves around the Phantom Thieves’ collaboration with the Rebel Corps, uncovering the mysterious origins of this alternate world while confronting the enigmatic enemy, the Legionnaires.
Fans can catch the Critical Role Persona 5 Tactica one-shot on Nov. 17 at 10 p.m. ET on Twitch and YouTube. Persona 5 Tactica will be available on Nov. 17 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
