Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Showcases Its Chocobo Riding Mechanic

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth gave fans a sneak peek into its new Chocobo riding and taming mechanics.

The official X, formerly known as Twitter, account for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth shared in-game clips of the Chocobo in action, with footage showcasing how players can catch one of the iconic bird mounts for themselves. These creatures are notably wary of strangers, so players must approach them without being noticed to tame them. Once recruited, players can ride the Chocobo throughout the game world. A tamed chocobo will additionally sometimes lead its rider to rare loot as they traverse the many locales of the upcoming sequel.

Chocobos are large bird-like creatures often used as mounts and pets throughout the Final Fantasy franchise. They were first introduced in Final Fantasy II and have since become an icon synonymous with the series, on a similar level of popularity to the smaller but just as beloved Moogles. They were also a prevalent element in the original Final Fantasy VII. Players could similarly capture and breed their own unique Chocobo, which they could then use as mounts to traverse the game world or even enter the races in the Golden Saucer’s Chocobo Square to win rare prizes.

What Can Fans Expect From Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the penultimate entry into the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. The sequel picks up right after the events of the last game, with Cloud Strife and his companions leaving the metropolis of Midgar on a search for the rogue SOLDIER, Sephiroth. Several beloved characters are also set to join them on their journey, including Vincent Valentine, Yuffie Kisaragi and Cait Sith. Director Naoki Hamaguchi further claimed that fan-favorite Zack Fair will play an integral role in the sequel, though he did not specify how Zack’s presence will affect the overarching narrative.

Hamaguchi additionally promised Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will feature even more story content than Final Fantasy VII Remake, with the director stating that developers were unable to fit the entire game into a single disc. “If we make it too big and spacious, players might think that there’s nothing to do in such a wide space,” he explained. “If we make it too small and narrow, players might not get a good sense of adventure.”

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth releases Feb. 29 for PlayStation 5.
