Final Fantasy XIV Drops Extended Teaser Trailer for Dawntrail Expansion

The world of Eorzea grows once more with an extended teaser trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV expansion, Dawntrail, which premiered this week on the game’s official YouTube channel.

The original trailer for the expansion debuted in July, beginning with the elven mage Alphinaud expressing his wanderlust from the deck of a sailing ship before cutting to a montage of scenes depicting an all-new region of Eorzea. This was interspersed with scenes of the game’s canon protagonist, the Warrior of Light, taking on brand-new beasts and monsters. However, the Final Fantasy XIV YouTube channel recently uploaded an extended cut of the trailer with longer scenes as well as the appearance of a brand-new class, the Viper.

Over a full minute longer than the original teaser for Dawntrail, the new trailer shows some of the game’s main characters much more prominently, with extended fight scenes featuring the dragoon Estinien and the protagonist, the Warrior of Light as they take on some of the expansion’s new enemies. The trailer is light on plot details, but it does showcase a brand-new region of the game’s world map and a fresh new look for the Warrior of Light, who now wears his hair tied back in a bun behind his head.

Dawntrail follows the previous expansion, Endwalker, which marked the conclusion to the game’s current decade-long story arc. As its new content releases begin to wind down with the upcoming 6.5x series of patches, the game’s developers have promised the beginning of a brand-new saga. Square Enix and Final Fantasy XIV‘s official social media accounts have not revealed any further details surrounding the expansion’s plot, although the company did reveal a brand-new player job called the Viper, which features prominently in the trailer’s extended cut.

Final Fantasy XIV creative director and producer Naoki Yoshida announced the new job in full cosplay at the Las Vegas Fan Fest following the trailer’s official debut earlier this year, confirming that it will be a melee-based DPS job with two swords that have the ability to attach to one another. At the event, Yoshida also alluded to a second job; a ranged magic-based DPS build that will reportedly be part of Dawntrail’s post-game content.

The extended teaser trailer also reveals that the game will release on the Xbox Series X|S, making Dawntrail the first-ever FFXIV expansion to premiere on the console alongside its PlayStation 4, 5 and PC versions. Currently, the expansion is set to release on all platforms in the summer of 2024, though no specific release date exists as of now.

In the meantime, new players can participate in one of the most successful MMORPGs of all time with Final Fantasy XIV‘s free trial, which grants access to the base game and its first two expansions at no charge. Currently, the game is set to host several major events, such as upcoming collaborations with Final Fantasy XVI and the online platformer Fall Guys.
