Jurassic World Joins Magic: The Gathering in New Ixalan Expansion Set

Magic: The Gathering sends players on prehistoric adventures with The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, an upcoming expansion set that also features iconic characters, creatures, and artifacts from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises.

Magic: The Gathering created the perfect backdrop for a Jurassic World crossover with the release of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a standard-release expansion and sequel set to 2017’s Ixalan and 2018’s Rivals of Ixalan. The Lost Caverns of Ixalan‘s subterranean backdrop makes it unique from previous expansion sets in the Ixalan block while deepening its lore of ancient heroes, creatures, and gods. Set in a prehistoric world where dinosaurs mingle with mythical creatures and characters, the new MtG expansion set also makes for a fitting crossover with the world of Jurassic Park.

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan will include cards from Jurassic World’s “Universes Beyond”, a crossover set of 26 cards featuring iconic places, characters, and creatures from the movie franchise. Every collector booster pack or 12-set booster pack will have one Jurassic World card inserted in place of a common or uncommon card. While the set includes the typical fare of Instant, Sorcery, Enchantment, Artifact, Creature, and Basic Land cards, it also features a handful of iconic characters from Jurassic World and Jurassic Park. Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, Henry Wu, Ian Malcolm, and Owen Grady will have their own playable Legendary Creature cards.

The Deep Lore of Ixalan

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan‘s lore is set years after the Phyrexian conflict and the March of the Machines, preceding the plane of Ixalan’s Omenpath Arc. The disappearance of The Immortal Sun forces everyone to go underground to mine a new resource called cosmium, leading to the discovery of Ixalan’s hollow core and a subterranean world with its own sun. Magic: The Gathering’s The Lost Caverns of Ixalan brings new and old game mechanics that make for interesting decks and play dynamics, such as Explore, Discover, Craft, and Descend.

Jurassic World is the latest franchise to cross over into Magic: The Gathering‘s “Universes Beyond” series, which previously featured tie-ins with Transformers, Warhammer 40,000, Street Fighter, and Fortnite. This year, Wizards of the Coast released MtG Commander Decks and Secret Lair drops for Doctor Who, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, and Tomb Raider. WotC has also confirmed new collaborations lined up for the Fallout, Assassin’s Creed, and Final Fantasy franchises.

Magic: The Gathering‘s The Lost Caverns of Ixalan will be released on Nov. 17.
