Magic: The Gathering Partners With Marvel for Multi-Year Collaboration

Marvel Comics is entering the universe of Magic: The Gathering via a multi-year collaboration with the collectible card game.

Hasbro Inc. made the official announcement, stating that Marvel will help bring the legendary comic heroes and villains of its comics line into Magic: The Gathering for the first time — and that there will be several card sets for fans of both franchises to collect. The first set will arrive in 2025, with more to come after the initial release. The Marvel Comics universe will be the latest entry into Magic: The Gathering‘s Universes Beyond crossover brand, which has brought numerous franchises into the mix in the past, including Fallout, Doctor Who and more.

Magic and Marvel Unite

The collaboration is a massive reveal, as Marvel Comics and Magic: The Gathering are both immensely popular and can greatly benefit each other by working together. Cynthia Williams, President of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Gaming, shared that sentiment in a press release: “We are extremely proud to collaborate with Marvel to bring its iconic characters to fans around the world in new ways. These tentpole sets will build on the tradition of incorporating beloved fan-favorite characters and elements from world-class brands into Magic: The Gathering.”

Marvel Comics shared that same sentiment. Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Comics and Franchise, said in the press release, “Trading cards have always been a part of Marvel’s DNA, so this collaboration takes that experience to a whole new level. With the depth that our storytelling and characters bring to the table, we can’t wait for fans to see how the Marvel Universe translates seamlessly into gameplay within these Magic: The Gathering products and sets for years to come.”

While the first cards that the crossover will get haven’t yet been revealed, plenty of characters could easily be brought into the first Magic: The Gathering set. For example, the teaser trailer for the collaboration highlighted the X-Men and the Avengers in various ways. Both superhero teams have numerous heroes and villains that collectors would love, including Captain America, Wolverine, Thor, Storm, Iron Man and Rogue, to name only a few. In addition, putting those heroes into the mix would open up their villains to join as well, such as Thanos, Magneto, Loki, Mr. Sinister, Kang The Conqueror, Apocalypse and more. Only time will tell who makes the cut.

The first Marvel Comics card set for Magic: The Gathering will arrive sometime in 2025.
