Magic: The Gathering Releases Its Secret Lair Secretversary Superdrop

This year’s Secretversary Superdrop launches with formidable Secret Lair cards showcasing Magic: The Gathering‘s celebration of unique art styles.

Wizards of the Coast celebrates another year of Secret Lair with the launch of highly collectible card sets. 2023’s Secretversary Superdrop brings unique card mechanics that make for interesting gameplay, and in keeping with Secret Lair tradition the sets also showcase an eclectic mix of retro, nostalgic, novel, abstract, and magical art styles. The Secret Lair team teased what’s in store for players in terms of card aesthetics never before explored in MtG‘s history of Secret Lair drops.

Eight Secret Lair sets are featured in this year’s Secretversary drop, contributing new artwork to Magic: The Gathering‘s broad spectrum of card aesthetics. Tales of the Time Stoppers channels the Silver Age of comics with Instant and Sorcery cards illustrated like comic book panels, while Paradise Frost reimagines Mana cards as snowy landscapes in featured artwork from French artist Elk 64. Through the Wormhole features space-themed Artifacts printed on galaxy foil cards, while Mycosynthwave is unmistakably retro with its 80’s synthesizer aesthetic, prominently featuring the Plane of Mirrodin’s perpetual sunset of five suns on the Artifact cards.

Secret Lair Homages Pop Culture

Secret Lair’s Tomb Raider introduces Lara Croft into the world of Magic: The Gathering, and Jurassic World pays homage to the franchise by pairing meme cards of Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm with creature cards straight out of Jurassic Park. Showcase: The Lost Caverns of Ixalan features five Legendary Creatures representative of the Ixalan block. Finally, Gift Wrapped brings holiday cheer with abstract card aesthetics evoking the sights and sounds of Christmas. Project Senior Business Manager Emily Floyd says the sets achieve what Secret Lair does so well, challenging the limits of what a Magic card can look like.

Art Director Jacob Covey says each Secretversary is a celebration of Secret Lair’s potential and contribution to Magic: The Gathering. “Secretversary is really special because it celebrates everything that we’re trying to do with Secret Lair,” he explained. “It’s got the partnerships [and] the unexpected art, it’s got this full art canvas cards that are all hand-drawn so we want there to be something available that a Magic fan can look at the cards and be like ‘Okay, I love that,’ ‘That makes me laugh,’ or ‘That makes me feel seen.’ Secretversary is just a real celebration of where Secret Lair has been, where it’s going, and where Magic is going.”

MtG’s Secret Lair Secretversary Superdrop is available now until Dec. 26 at Wizards Play Network retail locations and on Magic‘s Secret Lair website. Players get 10% off purchases until Nov. 27, and single-order purchases of at least $200 also come with “The Locust God,” a limited-edition promotional card.
