Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Creators Discuss the Challenges of Making the Game

Insomniac Games’ senior creative director Bryan Intihar revealed some of the challenges of making Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, including making it “worthy” of its main characters.

In an interview with Marvel, Intihar stated that the game’s name wasn’t just a simple sequel title but one that spoke to the nature of the story as there are two Spider-Men in New York City now. They needed a challenge that would push both of them to their limits. “I think what we wanted is we wanted to have a story [with] adversaries that are worthy of requiring two Spider-Men to save the day, hence bringing in this guy [Tony Todd] and seeing Venom. And then also, looking at our cast of Kraven and Lizard and others, they’re really challenging our heroes in ways that they’ve never been challenged before, whether it’s physically, psychologically,” he said.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Doubles The Challenges

Another thing that inspired the “2” in the title was the way the city was expanding from the previous titles. “Then you just look at the scale of the game with doubling the size of the city with Queens and Brooklyn, adding new traversal abilities with the Web Wings, and then just the whole role that the symbiote plays in both gameplay and the story. We knew when we said, ‘It’s gonna be called Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,‘ we had to earn that title, and I think that was the journey we wanted to go on,” Intihar explained

Voice actors Nadji Jeter and Yuri Lowenthal were also there for the interview and briefly spoke about what their characters were like and their challenges. For Miles, he’s “growing” into the role well but is also being shaped by everything that’s happening around him. He still has things to learn but is willing to take on the challenges.

As for Peter Parker, he’s trying to protect his city and loved ones while also keeping the memories of his Aunt May. Her house will be a key focal point for Peter’s story as he’s trying to keep it so that he doesn’t lose his memories of May, but it’s causing him to be more financially broken than before, and it weighs on his relationship with Mary Jane. All that happens before the Venom symbiote arrives pushing Peter to places he’s never been in this universe.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrives on PS5 on October 20.
