Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Glitch Lets Players Do the Naruto Run

A newfound glitch from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has the famous web-slinger recreating the iconic ninja run from Naruto.

An X (formerly Twitter) user called @who0407oki showcased footage on their page of Spider-Man riding a bicycle into a subway entrance, accompanied by text that reads, “Sad news, my Spider-Man. Become Naruto.” When Spider-Man emerges from the other side, his arms are locked behind him as he runs across the city, hearkening viewers back to the classic running pose featured in Masashi Kishimoto’s famous manga/anime. This is just one among several comical gameplay bugs that players have discovered in Insomniac’s acclaimed follow-up to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Although it’s been over 15 years since the end of Pierrot’s initial Naruto anime, the series’ running meme remains almost universally recognizable to anime fans. The iconic Naruto run is actually based on a real-life running style called “namba bashiri.” Historically, ninjas would keep their arms still as they run, while their momentum would make it appear as if they were purposely holding their arms behind their backs.

While this running style doesn’t actually increase anyone’s speed, it does adhere to the ninja’s belief that keeping the arms still while running conserves valuable energy. Nonetheless, the pose’s comical appearance has turned it into a popular meme within the anime fandom. In @who0407oki’s thread, many viewers made it clear that they were in on the joke, such as B.B. (or @BombasticCheeks), who shared a GIF of Naruto performing the “namba bashiri” run alongside several of his allies.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has received near universal acclaim from fans and critics, and the title currently holds an impressive 91 score on Metacritic. However, players have not shied away from pointing out the game’s bugs, which occasionally manifest as jarring graphical errors. Among the most famous of these is Spider-Man’s “tofu cube” glitch, wherein a player exits a menu screen to find that Spidey has morphed into a tiny white square. This glitch persists even as the player jumps off of a building and starts swinging around the city. Players have also reported glitches that allow them to free-roam as Venom or explore an out-of-bounds section of Kraven’s secret lair.

As of Oct. 23, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation Exclusive in Sony history, with the company reportedly selling over 2.5 million copies within the first 24 hours of its release.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is available now exclusively for PS5.
