Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Star Breaks Down His Quick Across the Spider-Verse Cameo

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Yuri Lowenthal loved getting to reprise his superhero role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, however briefly.

Speaking to PlayStation Lifestyle, Lowenthal revealed what it was like bringing Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man to the wider animated world and recording his lines behind the scenes. “We were honored that they would want to include Insomniac’s Spider-Man as part of the cinematic Spider-Verse, so I just brought that guy, which was basically just bringing me to the room,” he said, describing the collaboration process with co-writer Phil Lord as “a blast because he had some stuff that they thought they were going to go with, a couple lines, and said, “We think this is going to be it, but let’s spend an hour riffing and see what other sort of funny things we can come up.” I think, in the end, they ended up going pretty much with what they had originally thought they would do, but it was a blast just coming up with stuff with him.”

This isn’t Insomniac Spider-Man’s first encounter with the multiverse. The character played a supporting role in 2018’s ‘Spider-Geddon’ comic after Superior Spider-Man recruited him to battle the Inheritors, coinciding with both the game and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s release. During the interview, Lowenthal declared himself a massive fan of the Spider-Verse franchise since watching Into the Spider-Verse, stating, “I loved that first movie so much. It’s so great to be included. The second one was awesome, and they had already sort of teased it in that first movie, they had dropped a couple of Easter eggs” – a callback to Spider-Man’s PlayStation 4 costume appearing in Earth-1610 Peter Parker’s underground lair.

Additionally, Lowenthal wasn’t the only Spider-Man actor Sony brought back for Across the Spider-Verse. Donald Glover — who played Aaron Davis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was a direct inspiration for Miles Morales — cameoed opposite the PS4 Spider-Man as a live-action Prowler held in captivity by the Spider-Society. Josh Keaton, who voiced Spidey in The Spectacular Spider-Man, also reprised his role as the fan-favorite animated incarnation in a few scenes. Other notable Spider-Man cameos ranged from a Lego incarnation to archived footage of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s universes and even an extended scene in the Venom universe.

The release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, meanwhile, has proven to be a mega-hit for Sony’s gaming console. The PlayStation 5 game not only received universal acclaim but reportedly sold 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game to date.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is available now for PS5.
