Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Team Teases a Hero’s Future in the Insomniac Timeline

The following contains major spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5.

Gamers could very well see another Spider-Man origin story in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s sequel.

During a Gizmodo interview, Insomniac Games narrative director Ben Arfmann and advanced writer Brittney Morris teased what fans might expect from the game’s Cindy Moon (i.e. Silk) reveal and how she may factor into the Insomniac Spider-Man timeline. “Cindy’s always been a really compelling character in the comics who, similar to [SM1’s] Martin Li, hasn’t really gotten a ton of exposure outside of the immediate fanbase. There’s something really exciting about taking a character who we love, who not everybody’s had a chance to meet, and exposing her to a wider audience,” Arfmann said. Morris then described herself as “so excited to see what we do with Cindy,” with Arfmann adding, “figuring out who Insomniac’s Cindy Moon is is a really exciting challenge. And we also have this interesting complication that [Cindy’s dad] Albert is dating [Miles’ mom] Rio, and we’re thrilled to explore how that creates a new iteration of this character that folks already love.”

Cameoing in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s second post-credits scene — albeit without seeing her face — it remains unknown who will voice Cindy/Silk in the sequel or future Spider-Man DLC content. Aside from a few Marvel Cinematic Universe background appearances (played by Tiffany Espensen), this marks Cindy’s first notable role outside of the comics since her 2014 debut. However, Sony Pictures and Prime Video are currently collaborating on the character’s live-action series Silk: Spider Society, bringing Angela Kang (The Walking Dead) on board as showrunner and Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal as executive producers.

Debuting in Dan Slott’s Spider-Man run, Cindy’s backstory revealed that she gained spider powers from the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker back in high school. Shortly afterward, businessman Ezekiel Sims convinced Cindy to lock herself in one of his facilities to evade the Inheritor Morlun, where she remained until Peter freed her during the events of 2014’s “Original Sin.” As Silk, Cindy would play a major role in Slott’s first Spider-Versestoryline before receiving her own solo comic and even joining the Agents of Atlas team. Though she hasn’t appeared in any Spider-Verse movie yet, an in-development Spider-Women spinoffwill reportedly include Silk alongside Jessica Drew and Gwen Stacey’s Spider-Woman variants.

Since its release, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been a critical and commercial success for PlayStation, selling over 2.5 million copies within its first 24 hours. In addition to Spider-Man, Insomniac Games is currently working on a Wolverine game, which game director Bryan Intihar confirmed takes place within the Marvel’s Spider-Man timeline.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is currently available to play on PlayStation 5.
