New Nintendo Patent Reveals Dual-Screen Detachable Hand-Held Device

New Nintendo patent filings show a potential new hand-held device.

In images shared by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Nintendo had a series of filings, with one in particular standing out. The images show a device that looks incredibly similar to the Nintendo 3DS, only this time with the ability to be split into two separate devices. According to the product description, there are multiple ways in which the split devices can be connected, “The second connection unit can be connected to the first connection unit in a first orientation or in a second orientation that is the reverse from the first orientation.” This leads many fans to the conclusion that it would allow two players to interact and play wirelessly together.

This Device Varies From Nintendo’s Prior Alleged Switch 2 Patent

This patent comes on the heels of a different device filing that also had Nintendo enthusiasts in a frenzy, given the rampant rumors and speculations surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2. The previous patent certainly has more similarities between itself and the Switch, with some adjustments such as the removal of several buttons and the rearranging of others. The latest patent filing, however, resembles the company’s 2011 device, the 3DS. It’s important to remember that these are patents, not official announcements from Nintendo. Whether these devices are supposedly successors to earlier systems or if they will even be released is still uncertain.

To have another device with 3DS compatibility would be a nice surprise for dedicated Nintendo fans. The gaming giant recently shut down the 3DS online system, leaving longtime online players of various games in the dark when it comes to their favorite titles. The only exception to the rule was Pokébank, but that didn’t stop public outcry over the decision. The Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Wild World community, in particular, took to social media to post images and videos of the towns they worked hard to establish, knowing they would no longer be accessible to other players.

Outside their potential systems to come, Nintendo has big things in the works as usual. The release of the highly anticipated Mario platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a huge focus for the legendary gaming company at the moment, as is the upcoming release of Super Mario RPG, Princess Peach Showtime! and a host of others that were announced during the last Nintendo Direct.
