Nintendo Releases First Gameplay Trailer for Hogwarts Legacy on Switch

Hogwarts Legacy unveiled a gameplay trailer for its highly anticipated release on Nintendo Switch.

The promotional video gives fans a glimpse into the performance of Hogwarts Legacy‘s jump to the Switch, more than nine months after the title came out on other platforms. The trailer is notably the first detailed look into the in-game graphics and gameplay of Hogwarts Legacy‘s port to Nintendo’s portable console, with clips showcasing the characters and vast locales of the overworld through the lens of the Switch.

Based on the massively popular Harry Potter series, Hogwarts Legacy is a prequel video game set over a hundred years before the events of the source material. The story centers on a student who transfers into the titular School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is unwittingly embroiled in the search for a mysterious ancient secret. Apart from the eponymous school, Hogwarts Legacy also features other familiar locations in its massive world inspired by the Harry Potter books, such as Ollivanders, the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Valley. The title’s deluxe edition also includes a Dark Arts DLC pack which grants a Thestral mount, a unique cosmetic set and access to a special Dark Arts Battle Arena where players can test the infamous Unforgivable Curses early on.

Developers from studio Avalanche Software previously discussed how they translated the world of Harry Potter to the video game medium and how much effort the Hogwarts Legacy team poured into capturing the sheer scale of the iconic castle. Several members explained how Hogwarts’ size and scope turned the grounds into one of the most complex environments the studio ever designed, with developers losing themselves in their surroundings. “Hogwarts Legacy is the ultimate love letter to the fans. It’s the best way to experience this universe,” one member said.

While Hogwarts Legacy‘s release was met with positive reviews upon release, the lead-up to its launch was tethered to controversy due to previous public comments made by Harry Potter creator J. K. Rowling. The public backlash and calls for a boycott of Hogwarts Legacy were so widespread that Warner Bros. Interactive Head David Haddad released a statement denying Rowling’s involvement with Hogwarts Legacy‘s development, with the executive claiming the studio and publisher wanted every Harry Potter fan to enjoy the video game.

Hogwarts Legacy‘s Nintendo Switch version releases Nov. 14, with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions now available.
