Sony’s God of War Partners With CMON to Release an Upcoming Board Game

Players will have the opportunity to control Kratos and Atreus’ fates in a brand-new way with an upcoming board game adaption of 2018’s God of War officially confirmed.

Santa Monica Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment will release a God of War board game adaptation published by CMON, the board game maker also known for its detailed miniature pieces. CMON has confimed the project is already underway, even unveiling two of the miniature figures players can use in-game. The board game is a direct adaptation of the 2018 God of War video game, which focused on Kratos and his son Atreus’ adventures as they travel through the Nine Realms of Norse mythology and encounter formidable foes along the way.

The company announced plans to adapt God of War and George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels earlier this year, following the success of board game releases like Zombicide and Blood Rage. CMON’s products are primarily Kickstarter releases, and most of its bestsellers have been launched via the crowdfunding platform. This is the company’s second tie-in with the God of War franchise, having published the well-received God of War: The Card Game in 2019. CMON assures franchise fans that the plot, characters and setting of God of War will be faithfully adapted to the board game.

God of War Designed for Tabletop Gamers

CMON executive Geoff Skinner revealed the product has long been in its project pipeline, saying, “This game has been in the works for years, and I think both gamers and God of War fans will really like the end results. Our main goal was always: ‘Does this feel like God of War?’, and I think the designers did a tremendous job in that regard. Working with Santa Monica Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment has been an absolute dream, not only guiding us through the God of War setting, but also allowing us to bring the things we do best to the table.” Considering the deep lore of the video game, tabletop players are in for a treat when the adaptation drops.

Sony has built a massive franchise on the God of War series, having released 10 games on different platforms to date. The company has published six God of War titles on home consoles, two on handheld consoles, one on mobile and a Facebook Messenger text-adventure game. God of War: Ragnarök, the latest in the series, was released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in November 2022.

CMON’s God of War board game will be launched for crowdfunding in 2024, with a 2025 projected release date.
