Super Mario Bros Wonder Gets “Impressions” From Gamers Who Played Store Demo

A Super Mario Bros. Wonderstore demo has gotten several gamers to speak up about their experiences.

Nintendo released a small demo of their upcoming 2D platformer title to stores like Walmart, and multiple gamers got to play it. When they did, they gave various impressions, all of which were positive. For example, one player on Reddit posted that the game “felt great.” Another player on Twitter noted that while they only got to play two levels of the title, they really enjoyed it and wanted to play more. These lined up with more“official impressions” that praised the new elements of the title.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder Is Wonderful

One official source who played Super Mario Bros. Wonder at Walmart was the “insider” Stealth, who has always made his opinions known on Nintendo titles. He praised the control scheme, the game’s visual style, and the new Elephant power-up players can use. The only “flaw” in the demo was that he ran out of time and thus couldn’t enjoy it more. If these impressions are felt across the fanbase when the game comes out in a few weeks, then Nintendo will have a universally praised title and one that is likely to sell millions of units.

The game is the first original 2D platformer with Mario in several years. There have been remasters of past games for Switch, and the Mario Maker series let fans build their own levels, but this is different. Furthermore, the team took a different approach to the game to ensure its quality. First, they weren’t rushed to find a “unique hook” and way to make the game pop. Second, many younger developers on the team helped identify ways that the game could improve while also noting certain advances in gamer culture that could lead to a more streamlined experience as players dive into the title.

Among the many“new elements” is the Wonder Flower which will warp the stage the players are on to transform it into something special. The resulting shift can be almost anything, leaving the players to think on the fly as the level continues. Furthermore, scores of new enemies will add a new challenge for players to overcome. Badges are a key new element that could help players work their way through levels as each badge grants them a new ability to use within the level, and they can swap badges at each level.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder arrives on Nintendo Switch on October 20.
