Tekken 8 Reveals French Superspy Victor Chevalier as Latest Newcomer

Tekken 8 revealed the latest playable character in its roster and it’s a new face.

A video uploaded on PlayStation’s YouTube channel introduced a French superspy, Victor Chevalier, voiced by actor Vincent Cassel. Victor brings an elegant flair to Tekken 8 as well as deadly tools in the form of his pistol, beam sword, and combat knife. Not only is Victor arriving, but he also brings a new challenge with him — Celebration on the Seine — which takes place on a luxury yacht sailing across the Seine River in Paris.

Victor can be seen in his reveal trailer sporting a fancy suit and gadgets, using a combination of CQC and his weapons as well as some form of teleportation technology to get an edge over the opponent. Cassel said that he is a long-time Tekken player and is very excited to voice the new character in the iconic fighting game. Cassel has starred in many French films and English-speaking roles such as Black Swan and Ocean’s 12. He also voiced Diego in the French dub of the Ice Age franchise.

“So I discovered Tekken 90s and I became interested in the game because there was a character called Eddy Gordo, who was a Capoeirista, and at the time I practiced Capoeira. So I bought the game and played exclusively with this character,” Cassel said in a promotional videofor Bandai Namco Entertainment. “What do I like about the character of Victor Chevalier? First of all, that he’s French, and that there’s a Frenchman in a game that’s internationally well-known. The character has a particular characteristic: he’s very elegant. And I get the impression that his way of being and clothing conveys a certain idea of French elegance, so of course, I was drawn to him. And the fact that they asked me to do it, I was flattered.”

Cassel described the voice-acting process for Victor in the video. He mentioned that it was a bit different from dubbing a character in a series that had already been released in another language and not having that restriction makes it easier to build a new character from the ground up.

“There are actually several methods of dubbing. When you’re asked to dub a cartoon or animation that already exists, that was created in a foreign country and I find myself working as the French dubber, you have to more or less follow what has already been done,” Cassel said. “However, when you take part in the creative process, you’re working with little unfinished sketches, it’s not set in stone yet. And in fact, what we do in the recording room helps with the development of the character.”

Those excited to take on the role of superspy Victor will get a chance to do so when Tekken 8 launches on January 25, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
