The Next Marvel’s Spider-Man Game Will Focus Solely On Miles Morales

The writers behind Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 confirm the PlayStation series will move forward with Miles Morales as the main Spider-Man.

In an interview with Gizmodo, Insomniac Games’ narrative director Ben Arfmann and advanced writer Brittney Morris discussed the long-term implications of the ending of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. At the end of the game, Peter Parker decides to take a leave of absence as Spider-Man to establish the Emily-May Foundation, as well as focus on his relationship with Mary Jane Watson. Before Peter can stumble out the words to Miles, the new Spider-Man interrupts him with “I got this. All of it. Go be Peter Parker for a while.”

When asked if developer Insomniac Games always intended to end Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with Peter passing the torch to Miles, Morris said it was a natural evolution of everything that came before it. “To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life,” Morris said. “By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points. That’s what’s been so cool about writing a story about two Spider-Men: they’re both strong, and one of them can be strong when the other is not. By the end, Miles is more confident and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I got this. How much worse can things get after what we just went through?'”

Arfmann also chimed in. “To echo what Brittney said: the idea of a two Spider-Man story was always really essential to this game. I think pretty early on, we knew that we wanted to have that moment of handing the reins over. And as we developed it, as we started to lay down more track leading up to that moment, it just felt more and more right… The way that Miles intuits exactly what Pete is thinking and stops him from stumbling through trying to hand over the mask. Miles going, ‘You know I got this, bro,’ it’s such a great moment between the two of them. And it felt like such a natural conclusion; I’m not sure when specifically we decided to do that, but it always felt like the only way the game could end.”

Outside of Miles becoming the main web-slinger in the next Marvel’s Spider-Man game, fans can look forward to seeing more of Cindy Moon, also known as the spider heroine Silk. Both writers at Insomniac Games were excited about where the character created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos (The Amazing Spider-Man #1 April 2014) could go in the video game threequel. Hilariously, neither writer would confirm nor deny if the thought of giving Miles a Venom costume ever came up.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is now available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The first Marvel’s Spider-Man game and Spider-Man: Miles Morales are available on PlayStation and PC.
