Tomb Raider Announces Crossover with Magic: The Gathering

Tomb Raider is next in the series of video game crossovers Wizards of the Coast lined up for when the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drops.

IGN revealed the seven-card Tomb Raider set included in next week’s Secret Lair drop, which contains a treasure token and five cards reprinted with new art. The set also comes with Lara Croft’s very own Legendary Creature card, which upon attack will exile a legendary artifact card or legendary land card from a graveyard. Lara Croft is the newest character added to Magic: the Gathering‘s roster of video game crossovers, with Fallout commander decks and a full Final Fantasy crossover card set to be released next year.

The cards in the Tomb Raider crossover will give players an assortment of advantages in terms of card management, creature damage, and creature buffs. The set also offers a good mix of card types: a double-faced Heart of the Explorer / The Lost Valley card (Legendary Enchantment / Legendary Land), Kitezh, Sunken City (Legendary Land), Storms of Yamatai (Sorcery), Totec’s Spear (Legendary Artifact – Equipment), and The Grim Whisper (Legendary Enchantment Artifact). The cards’ abilities complement and are best used in a deck built around Lara Croft’s Legendary Creature card.

Tomb Raider One of the Best Secret Lair Drops?

Wizards of the Coast Senior Product Designer Daniel Nguyen assures players that the Tomb Raider crossover will be a solid addition to Magic: the Gathering. “The goal is always to create products that respect and celebrate the partner, the fans, AND that the cards in the drop feel like they belong in someone’s deck,” he explained. “All are important, and it’s a delicate balance to strike. There are a LOT of conversations that happen during product development with a number of different factors considered, and the inclusion of mechanically unique cards is one of them.”

Nguyen says the Secret Lair series experiments and pushes the boundaries of what players expect from a typical Magic: the Gathering card. This is in line with previous releases like the mechanically unique cards in the Street Fighter set, the card redesigns of the Fortnite drop, or the special Jurassic World card featuring Chris Pratt. “[We’re] always listening to feedback (yes, we read ALL of the comments) and you can expect us to take in that feedback and apply it to future drops that you see,” Nguyen said. Wizards of the Coast has already confirmed the release of Marvel crossover sets in 2025.
