Ubisoft celebrated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time‘s 20th anniversary with an update on the highly anticipated remake.
Ubisoft’s official X (formerly Twitter) account commemorated The Sands of Time‘s 20th birthday with a look back into the series’ history and a brief assurance regarding the status of the landmark title’s remake. “As you know, the passionate team at [Ubisoft Montréal] is reimagining this legendary story, and we are glad to announce today that the project has passed an important internal milestone and development is progressing. We look forward to sharing more in the future!” Ubisoft’s post reads.
Prince of Persia Trailer Receives a Lot of Criticism
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was announced back in 2020. It was originally under the purview of Ubisoft India and scheduled for release in 2021. However, the remake’s announcement trailer was heavily criticized by fans, many of whom found the game’s graphical fidelity lacking for a modern remake of a beloved classic. The public backlash was reportedly so severe that The Sands of Time remake’s launch was pushed back to March 2021 over quality concerns. It then lost a concrete release period shortly after Ubisoft announced its Montreal branch would take over the project in 2022, which further fueled rumors regarding the remake’s turbulent development.
Since then, Ubisoft Montreal producer Jean-Francois Naud reported The Sands of Time remakeslipped back into the conception stage after his studio took over development, with Naud additionally warning it will be a long time before fans of the game receive a major update or release. Despite the setback, Naud promised his team would remain devoted to the project’s completion and additionally assured they were attentive to the fans’ concerns.
“Since we took over the project, we’ve been looking at feedback from the community and finding our own way of delivering the game,” Naud said. “Now we’re building up the team, defining the priorities, putting prototypes together, testing elements and looking at how we can include community feedback in the development as well. It’s still in an early stage, and players should not expect to hear more about the game this year, but rest assured that we’re all putting our strengths and heart into this project.”
At the time of writing, the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has yet to receive an official release date.
